Monday June 25

Today we went over to the Student Health Center. Anna was not in when we got there, so we began working on the 2nd "Eat Breakfast" bulliten board until Anna arrived. I asked her about the Oasis center, she explained, is a place for students to come and relax. From national surveys that duke is a part of every two years stress always comes up as something that affects students tremendously. The center is a very big room with comfy chairs, a fish tank, massage chairs, fountain, etc. for students to come and relax in. They can also study their if the wish. She said she would take us over there on Wednesday to work for all day if we choose. We also may go out to lunch with Anna if her schedule permits it. We then thought up some more questions for Franca before our meeting at 10:30. During our meeting, we got a few more details about the Merchants on Points project Franca wanted us to do. She is looking for us to compile 2-4 healthier options from each of the Merchant on Points(MOP). The idea is that it will be made into a little booklet to give out to students. The focus is on late night eating, and what are some better options for athletes at the end of the day. Next we into asking Franca questions about what her job entails. When working with coaches and sports teams on a collegiate level, I found it interesting that the athletic trainers were her best resource. She said it is important to network where ever you get a job, and to work together (different departments) as much as possible. It makes everybody's job easier. We also went over the "Devil's Choice" proposal we gave to Anna on Friday. Some changes were made, and we came up with labeling scheme for the healthy options. The snack options that meet our criteria the way they are already packaged will go on one end cap in the store with coordinating stickers. Then, for things that make up part of a healthy snack will hae half of a sticker on it to show it is part of a healthy snack. There will be two categories for partial snacks. One half will be carbohydrates (crackers, fruit, etc) labeled with a half blue sticker, the other category is proteins (cottage cheese, peanut butter, etc.) and will be labeled with half a burnt orange sticker. This way students can make healthy snack options. They are hoping to get this program off the ground by the beginning of the school year, and if it goes well expand it to other convenient stores, then the eateries. Our meeting ran into lunch time, so Cassie and I headed over to West campus to grab some lunch from Alpine Atrium. I tried the BBQ chicken wrap. It was great, but it was a little big (like everything they serve there) and made me full. Cassie and I sat out on a deck outside the Union where Alpine is and enjoyed the beautiful weather while we ate.
After lunch, we headed back over to the Student Health Center to continue working on our projects. We printed out the rest of the materials for the other breakfast bulliten board to go in the recreational center on West Campus. I got to sit in on a counseling session with Anna. The it was an international graduate student who was looking to gain weight. The session was very interesting to sit in on. I was able to think back to my counseling class on the methods and techniques we discussed and see how it was actually used. This was a very straight forward session. (Picture of one of the Quads on campus. Since there are no Greek houses, they have the quads and areas of the dormitories with their greek letters and benches)

After the session Cassie and I finished the bulliten board and continued to work on the Merchants on Point choosing our menu options to be included and determining the format. We also plan to include tips on eating out healthy specifically related to the specific menus of each MOP.

Do those half stickers form a shape or something when put together? Are they the school colors? Just wondering how a person would know you need one of each? I wish the vending machines at work had something like that.
