Monday, June 18

Met Anna, asked questions and found out about her path to her current job. She started off with a psychology degree, then went through a Coordinated Dietetics program and got a MPH. She consults with students about 60% of the time on disordered eating and eating disorders, then the rest of her time is spent figuring out ways to improve health on campus. We went over projects for the next two weeks. We are to do a bulliten board in the student health center. Our main project for Anna will be Devil's Choice program, in which we are going to work with the convenience stores on campus and promote healthy snacking. Anna gave us an outline of things she would like us to cover. For Franca we are going to find nutritional information for the vendors that deliver to campus. Here at Duke they have agreements with about 15 restaurants and eateries close to campus that will deliver and will allow students to use their Duke flex meal plan. Many of the athletes Franca works with use these delivering eateries because all the others are closed when they get done with practices. I guess I should also mention that students are required to live on campus the first two years, and then the majority move to the on campus
apartments for at least another year. All on campus residents are required to have a meal plan. Thus the athletes use these Merchants on Points as they called. Franca would like to have a sheet to give the athletes listing the healthier options. After our meeting. Cassie and I worked on our bulliten board until we finished. We did a bulliten board on the importance of eating breakfast. When we finished it was time for lunch. We went to eat at subway for the first time. The subway is very tiny and was VERY busy. The cashier, Anthony, new who we were even though we had not met him yet. It must have been from our ID cards that we swiped to get our meal. Anyways he was a very nice man. We ate lunch, and then headed over to the convience store in the union called The Lobby Shop to scope out the store for our project. I asked the cashier where we could find Tom Craig, the General Manager and the person Anna directed us to see. He happened to be within sight so we flagged him down and set up an appointment for 3:30 that day. Until then Cassie and I did some research online to come up with criteria to be a Devil's Choice item and analyzed the store thoroughly as far as items for sale, sizes of packages, placement in store, etc. In our meeting at 3:30 with Tom we asked him questions about what the store had in mind for this program. He was very receptive to us using an end cap for all our Devil's Choice items and would be willing to put signs advertising it. He showed us some financials to see that the stores sold mostly drinks and candy bars. We recommended that the store supply more individual packaged items instead of selling whole boxes. For example, instead of selling 6 boxes of raisins together sell each individually. Most of the items in the store were too big for a student to pickup between classes for a snack. Tom explained the idea that the convenience store was used by many as a grocery store on campus since no grocery store was very close. He was also very receptive to our suggestions about items to add to the convenience stores like pita and hummus, individual peanut butter and cream cheese containers. He said that the only one of the three convenience stores that made money was the one in the Union. Following dinner Cassie and I used our Flex money to buy Rec passes for the rest of the summer. Then we went and checked out the Rec center. It was fairly busy and pretty nice. It was about half the size of the Rec at K-State. We left the Rec too late and missed the last bus ride back to the apartments, so we walked home (it is only about a 15 minute walk).
